The Orthoceras was a very primitive member of the Phylum Cephalopoda and is similar to the Ammonite, with a straight shell. Approximately 400 Million Years Old, Orthoceras are the ancestral cousin of the modern Squid or Octopus. The tube that runs down the center of the fossil is called a Siphuncle and was used to carry gas into the chambers to control the buoyancy of the shell. The Orthoceras from Morocco occur as a white fossil in a dark gray and black marble matrix which results in a fossil with very good contrast. Price includes: Metal Display Stand.
